Foresite vs Umami

Umami Cloud is free for one site up to 100,000 events a month, and its $20 Pro plan costs less than Foresite from just above 250,000 to about 3.6 million events if you have 20 sites or fewer ($20 vs $39 at 1 million). Foresite costs less for two or more small sites ($4 or $9 vs $20), from about 3.7 million events ($149 vs $200 at 10 million), and beyond 20 sites, where Umami needs its $200 Business plan, and every Foresite price includes unlimited sites, every feature and branded client reporting. Pick Umami to self-host, pay nothing for one site, or get team logins, funnels, journeys, retention and an API; pick Foresite to run many client sites under your own brand without choosing or outgrowing a plan.

Price comparison

Monthly prices in US dollars, before tax. Umami Cloud prices are its plan price plus its published overage rate for events above the plan's allowance. Foresite has one price per traffic level. The lowest price in each row is in bold.

Monthly events Umami Cloud Hobby (1 site) Umami Cloud Pro (up to 20 sites) Umami Cloud Business (unlimited sites) Foresite (unlimited sites)
10,000 $0 $20 $200 $4
100,000 $0 $20 $200 $9
250,000 Above the Hobby limit $20 $200 $19
500,000 $20 $200 $29
1,000,000 $20 $200 $39
2,500,000 $65 $200 $69

50,000,000 $1,490 $1,000 $449

Things to know when you read this table:

  • Overage is how Umami's paid plans scale. Pro includes 1 million events and charges $0.00003 for each event above that, which is $30 per extra million. Business includes 10 million and charges $0.00002 per extra event, $20 per million. Up to about 7 million events, Pro with overage costs less than Business, unless you need more than 20 sites. Umami doesn't interrupt collection when you go over, and you can set a monthly spending budget. If your estimated bill passes it, Umami stops recording events until the next billing period.
  • Hobby has no overage price. Its limit is 100,000 events a month for one website, and Umami's pricing page doesn't say what happens above that. Plan on Pro if you might grow past it.
  • Umami's prices rise smoothly, and Foresite's rise in steps. Foresite charges the price of the smallest step that covers your traffic. Just past a step, that costs you: at 1.1 million events, Umami Pro is $23 and Foresite is $69.
  • Umami counts more things as events. On Umami Cloud, each pageview and custom event is one event, each event property you store is one more, and session data you store also counts. Foresite counts pageviews and custom events only, and their properties and revenue amounts are free. A purchase sent with a revenue amount and a currency is three events on Umami and one on Foresite, so if your events carry properties, your Umami total will be higher than your Foresite total for the same traffic. See how we count.
  • Site limits decide the plan as much as traffic does. Hobby covers 1 website and Pro covers 20. A 21st site means Business at $200 a month, so an agency with 30 small client sites and 1 million events in total pays $200 on Umami Cloud and $39 on Foresite.
  • Choosing a plan. On Umami Cloud you pick the plan, and plan changes take effect on your next billing cycle. Foresite has no plans to pick: each month, your next bill is the price for last month's traffic, up or down, and collection never stops. See pricing.
  • Yearly billing. Umami's pricing page lists monthly prices only, but its Cloud FAQ says billing can be monthly or annual. Foresite is billed monthly only.

Self-hosting Umami

Umami is open source under the MIT license, and the self-hosted version is free. It has the same analytics features as Umami Cloud, including teams, the API, funnels, session replays and heatmaps, with no event, site or retention limits. Email reports are only in Umami Cloud.

The licence is free, but running it isn't. You need a server that runs Node.js (18.18 or newer) and a PostgreSQL database (12.14 or newer), either on one machine or on an app host with a managed database. You also handle updates, backups, security and scaling yourself, and fix it when it goes down. What that costs depends on your traffic, the provider you choose and what your time is worth. If you already run servers, self-hosted Umami can be the cheapest option on this page. If you don't, count your hours as well as the hosting bill. Foresite can't be self-hosted. It's a managed service only.

When Umami is the better choice

  • You have one small site and want to pay nothing. Up to 100,000 events a month, with 6 months of history, Umami Cloud's Hobby plan is free. Foresite starts at $4 a month.
  • You have up to 20 sites and more than 250,000 but under about 3.6 million events. In that range, Pro is cheaper: $20 vs $29 at 500,000, $20 vs $39 at 1 million, $65 vs $69 at 2.5 million.
  • You want to host it yourself. Umami is fully open source under MIT, and self-hosting is free apart from your server and your time. Foresite can't be self-hosted.
  • Several people need their own logins. Umami has teams with roles from Pro up. A Foresite account has one login.
  • You need product analytics. Funnels, journeys, retention, attribution, segments, cohorts, custom dashboards, annotations, Core Web Vitals and city-level locations are all in Umami, and none of them is in Foresite. Business adds session replays and heatmaps.
  • You connect analytics to other tools. Umami has an API and an MCP server for AI assistants from Pro up, and can import data from self-hosted Umami or CSV. Foresite has none of these.
  • You want to follow signed-in users. Umami's Distinct IDs link a user's visits across sessions and devices. Foresite never identifies anyone.
  • You want a long track record. Umami has been open source since 2020 and has about 39,000 stars on GitHub. Foresite launched in October 2026.

When Foresite is the better choice

  • You run several small sites. $4 or $9 a month covers every site you have. Umami's free plan covers one site, and its next step is $20.
  • You run more than 20 sites. One Foresite price covers them all. On Umami Cloud, a 21st site means Business at $200 a month, against $39 on Foresite at 1 million events.
  • You have a lot of traffic. From about 3.7 million events a month, Foresite costs less: $99 vs $140 at 5 million, $149 vs $200 at 10 million and $449 vs $1,000 at 50 million.
  • You're an agency or freelancer. Every price includes a multi-site overview, branded share links clients open without logging in, and weekly or monthly email reports under your logo, name and colours. Share links can be served from your own address. On Umami Cloud, email reports start at Pro and white-label starts at Business, at $200 a month.
  • Your events carry details. Properties and revenue amounts don't count toward Foresite's price, and on Umami Cloud each one does.
  • You don't want to manage a plan. Your price follows last month's traffic, up or down, every feature is in every price, and collection never stops because of traffic or a budget.
  • You want outbound links, downloads and 404s without tagging each element. Switch each one on per site in Foresite.
  • Ad blockers hide a real share of your visitors. A custom domain serves Foresite from your own subdomain with two DNS records, and you don't need to run a proxy.
  • You want the smallest script. Foresite's tracking script is about 1.1 KB compressed, and Umami Cloud's is about 2.4 KB.
  • You want to keep all your history for as long as you're subscribed, without a 6-month, 2-year or 5-year limit.

Switching from Umami

Foresite has no importer, so your Umami history stays in Umami. On Umami Cloud, export each site as CSV in Settings → Data before you cancel or downgrade to Hobby, which keeps 6 months. If you self-host, keep a backup of your database.

  1. Start a Foresite trial and add your sites. Seven days, no card.
  2. Add the Foresite Tracking Script next to Umami's. It's one line in the <head> of your site. The install guide has steps for Webflow, Framer, Squarespace, WordPress, Wix, Shopify and Carrd.
  3. Recreate your events. Change umami.track('signup', { plan: 'pro' }) to foresite('signup', { props: { plan: 'pro' } }). For revenue, change umami.track('checkout', { revenue: 19.99, currency: 'USD' }) to foresite('checkout', { revenue: { amount: 19.99, currency: 'USD' } }), in your site's currency. Foresite doesn't read data-umami-event attributes, so call foresite() from a click handler on those elements instead. Then add your Goals in Settings → Goals. See custom events, goals and revenue. To track outbound links, downloads or 404 pages, switch on automatic events.
  4. Move your ad-blocker setup. If you proxy Umami's script, set up a custom domain or a self-hosted proxy for Foresite.
  5. Run both for the trial and compare. Pageviews should be close. Visitor totals will differ: Umami can recognise a returning visitor for longer than a day, and Foresite counts each visitor once per day, so over a week or a month Foresite's visitor total is usually higher. See how we count.
  6. Remove the Umami script once you're happy with Foresite, and cancel or downgrade your Umami Cloud plan.
